WORKSHOPS AND COURSES
Professional Development Opportunities at Odyssey Institute
Every year we offer accredited professional development opportunities in the fields of environmental/outdoor education. For this coming academic year (2012-2013) we have updated our WFR course to include a detailed SEA-specific curriculum.
Wilderness First Aid and First Responder :: 16-22 June, 2013 :: $180/500
Our Wilderness First Aid (WFA), and Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses are delivered by an Australian team of accredited instructors. Both courses include CPR certification. We have specifically reworked the WFR course to include a SEA-specific module that deals with the realities of working in tropical wilderness environments.
Why Wilderness First Aid? Wilderness means remote. A Wilderness setting is anywhere more than one hour away from definitive medical care, which is almost everywhere in the developing world. WFA/WFR courses are designed to provide you with the tools you need to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Your time will be spent completing practical skills, examining case studies and discussing scenarios designed to challenge your decision making abilities. Adult & Child CPR is included in this course.
The WFR curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, evacuation procedures plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists.
